Add/drop multiplexers insert and remove user payloads to and from the frames circulating in the ring. Repeaters amplify and synchronize the signal as required. The section layer of the SONET protocol stack operates between repeaters, while the line layer operates between multiplexers. The path layer manages end- to-end communications.
